Security Bars : Important Considerations
It is important when acting to prevent one hazard from inviting another. This can and often is the case with security bars. They
are effective at detering and preventing intruders but can also trap people in.
Security bars are metal grates put on windows and doors. They are difficult for intruders to defeat. Their construction is quite solid and are bolted directly to the frame.
Intruders often move on instead of taking the time and effort necessary to defeat the bars.
The problem associated with security bars is that some, particularly older ones, do not have quick release mechanisms. Should a fire break out, people are denied exit. People die
each year in fires due to a lack of exits and most often it is children.
Security bars are an effective home protection measure. However, their implementation must be carefully considered. Newer security bars are usually outfitted
with quick release mechanisms. If you have security bars, make certain such a mechanism is in place. If not, you should either retrofit them or remove the bars entirely.
